APP Enrichment and Test Preparation Activities

APP Entrance Exams
UC Davis Academic Preparation Programs’ (APP) entrance examination program is designed to prepare students’ test taking skills. The program is designed for 8th through 11th grade participants. Student learn to take college entrance exams by practicing a annual regional test practice sessions. These sessions and the eventual review of the test results at regional results sessions, help students and families assess strengths and weaknesses in academic disciplines. Additionally, we offer limited slots each year for juniors and seniors to participate in test preparation courses designed to teach key test-taking strategies for the SAT Reasoning (Scholastic Aptitude Test) and/or ACT (American College Test). Keep an eye out in your mail for annual invitation to the Winter regional test practice sessions for 8th -11th grade students or for formal test preparation course offerings.
NOTE: Only students formally enrolled in APP’s EAOP, UB or ETS programs can participate in the following programs:

College Success Institute: UC Davis is the APP's summer enrichment program. The program is designed to provide the following year's 9th, 10th and 11th grade students the opportunity to review key math and writing skills that will be expected of them in those grades as well as the chance to spend a week on a college campus learning to work in teams, exploring careers and reviewing college preparation knowledge. SAT Critical Reading and Writing Skills Course
This is a two day course (full weekend on the UC Davis campus) taught by seasoned SAT preparation instructors. The goal is to prepare high school seniors and juniors for the rigors of the SAT critical reading and writing sections. Students get their own copy of Barron’s SAT preparation book along with 15+ hours of test preparation instruction. Our course for Seniors in generally held in the fall and for Juniors in the Spring. Community Algebra AcademyStudents working at their desks
CAA is a community based program developed in collaboration with Sacramento’s St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church. CAA provides 8th and 9th struggling with Algebra I the opportunity to review and strengthen critical skill needed for success in the subject. The program runs for 5 Saturdays during the Fall semester (funds permitting). Dates for this program can be viewed on our calendar when available.
Regional Entrance Exam Test Practice Sessions
Entrance exam test practice sessions are offered at three regional sites during the Winter quarter (January, February and March). These sessions are offered every year to 8th - 11th grade students to provide a consistent annual opportunity to practice taking timed college entrance exams. 8th and 9th grade students may take the ACT EXPLORE test, 10th can take the ACT PLAN and 11th graders can take the ACT/SAT Combination Exam. Regional Entrance Exam Results Sessions
Regional results sessions are held six weeks after the practice sessions to review exam results and discuss how students and families can constructively use the results. The dates for the regional entrance exam results session can are listed on our calendar page.
Health Professions Saturday Academy (HPSA)APP Students at the Health Professions Saturday Academy
The HPSA program is designed for 10th and 11th grade students in good academic standing (2.8+ GPA) with an interest in a future career in the health professions. Participating students are selected on a competitive basis. HPSA students have the opportunity to interact in a variety of four medical rotations focused on gastrointestinal tract to cardiovascular health. Rotations are taught by first and second year medical students at the UC Davis Medical School. There is a focus on hands-on activities as well as a culminating group research project on a public health issue. Deadlines for HPSA are listed on our calendar page.
Mondavi Matinee Program (grades 8-12)
APP offers students the opportunity to participate in the UC Davis Mondavi Center’s matinee performance Program. Selected school APP school have the opportunity to attend performances by world renowned Artists in music, theatre and dance (funds permitting).
Capitol Focus Scholarship Program (California Center for Civic Engagement)
APP is currently (as of 2/1/09) offering students the opportunity to apply for two scholarships for students participate in the three-day Capitol Focus program April 19th -21st. Selected students will have the opportunity to learn about California public affairs and legislative/policy issues directly from legislators as well as participate in mock hearings and policy committees. This is a three day program at the State Capitol and lodging and meals will be provided the selected students.
Summer Algebra Academies - College Going Initiative/CGI (Dixon, Esparto and Grant High Schools)
CGI Algebra Academies are held in the three local high school (Dixon, Esparto and Grant High Schools). These academies are designed for rising 9th graders and provide a 5-week intensive focus on Algebra I skill Development as well as orient future 9th graders to their new high school and its math instructors.
